6 Cocktails You Must Try from Cuba8/2/2021
6 Cocktails You Must Try from Cuba
‘Cuba’ is pretty much synonymous with ‘rum’, and Havana’s bars – and the cocktails born out of them – have played a massive role in the recent mixology revival. Many of Cuba’s cocktails are now enjoyed all over the world, whether by the beach, in nightclubs, or in bars and restaurants. Some of these you might have heard of before, others less so. Here are our top 6 must-try cocktails from Cuba
The MojitoOne of the most famous Cuban drinks, and one of the most famous cocktails in the world, the Mojito is usually made with rum, sparkling water, sugar, lemon juice, ice, and mint. In Havana, many bars will also add a splash of Angostura bitters to balance out the sweetness, while icing sugar is often mixed with mint leaves – rather than cane sugar – or some establishments simply use sugar syrup. The Mojito was the favorite drink of author and Havana resident, Ernest Hemingway, and, thanks to its combination of sweet sugar, sharp citrus, and herbaceous mint, the mojito is a popular summer drink. The DaiquiriThe Daiquiri was named after the rum-producing district in Cuba, and this cocktail is perhaps one of the best known around the world. It’s also the traditional drink of the renowned Floridita bar in Havana. A Daiquiri is typically made with rum, citrus juice (usually lime juice), and sugar or another form of sweetener. It’s one of the six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s classic book The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. There are many variations of the Daiquiri, such as the Daiquiri Floridita – which features less sugar and the addition of a maraschino liqueur – the Hemingway Daiquiri – similar to the Floridita but it also contains grapefruit juice – the Banana Daiquiri or Strawberry Daiquiri. The Piña ColadaWhile the Piña Colada doesn’t originate from Cuba but from Puerto Rico, this refreshing drink is popular in Cuba and is a huge part of the traditional mixology of the island. In fact, you’ll find them in pretty much every bar in Cuba. The Piña Colada is made with rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk, and pineapple juice, and it’s usually served either blended or shaken with ice. It’s sometimes garnished with a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, or both, and it’s the perfect way to relax on a hot, sultry day. The Cuba Libre/ CubataMade from a refreshing blend of rum, Coca Cola, ice cubes, and a squeeze of lemon or lime, the Cuba Libre – which translates to “free Cuba” – became popular when bottled Coca Cola was first imported into the country from the U.S. after Cuba won independence in the Spanish-American war. In Spain, it’s instead known as the Cubata, which is the name it is more commonly recognized by around the world. While drink critics often consider the Cuba Libre mediocre, there’s no denying that the drink’s historical significance, its simplicity, and its accessibility make it a firm contender among Cuba’s most famous alcoholic drinks. El PresidenteThe El Presidente cocktail became popular in the 1920s and was named after former Cuban President, Gerardo Machado, who governed the country between 1925–1933. This is a pretty special cocktail, as some mixologists believe it is the only bona fide classic cocktail that is supposed to use blanc vermouth (Chambéry vermouth) which is harder to find, and is frequently mismade with dry vermouth. Today, the cocktail is most frequently made with rum, orange curaçao, vermouth, and grenadine and, as per tradition is served in a glass with cherries and orange peel. Variations of the drink sometimes use other orange liqueurs rather than curaçao, however, as the drink is traditionally meant to be red in color, blue curaçao is generally avoided. The red coloring is achieved by using red curaçao, or, when paler colors are used, the red comes from the grenadine. The SaocoThe Saoco is a traditional Cuban cocktail which uses just a few ingredients: rum, coconut water, lime, sugar or honey, and ice. Saocos were made by poor communities in Cuba who used their resourcefulness to make this refreshing drink out of whatever ingredients they had access to. Havana Club 3 Años is the rum of choice for this cocktail and if you can carve into a green coconut to extract the juice when they are in season, you’ll get a true taste of an authentic Saoco, and can even serve the cocktail up in the empty shell of the coconut. The Saoco is a refreshing and simple cocktail which has been made and enjoyed by generations of Cubans. Final VerdictCuba has a rich and vibrant history of mixology which far exceeds this article. For example, there are many other delicious Cuban cocktails to try, such as the Havana Loco, The Cuban Ginger, The Cubanita, the Crema de Vie, the Canchanchara, the Cult of Life and the Havanísima. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Cuba, we definitely recommend trying as many of these cocktails as you can! While you can replicate them at home, it’s pretty hard to beat the romance of Cuba’s crumbling facade, charming old bars, and vintage cars. Elevate Your Next Bloody Mary with These Vodka Brands
Is there a cocktail more popular and iconic than the Bloody Mary? First invented among the glitz and glitter of the 1920âs â this signature cocktail has remained a popular favorite among cocktail lovers ever since! Made from a rich and devilish concoction of vodka, tomato juice and spices â this particular drink has had a long and storied history. One that has seen the Bloody Mary go from a vintage party drink to a nutritious hangover cure. And the most wonderful thing about Bloody Marys is that they are simple enough to make from the comfort of your own home. Making a Bloody Mary at home or at the bar can be easy, especially when you consider how simple and obtainable the ingredients are. Most grocery stores will have everything you need to make this delicious cocktail, from the tomato juice to the Worcestershire sauce. However, there is one ingredient that may need some consideration before you finalize your purchase â and thatâs vodka. What is the best vodka for bloody mary drinks? Now, if you are the kind of person who only enjoys their vodka in cocktails, then you probably think that any vodka will do for the job. And in some ways, youâd be right, as any vodka can be used to complete this decadent recipe. However, if you wish to elevate your cocktail to a level that could be considered almost professional, then we suggest you take a look at the vodkas we have listed down below. These vodkas are smooth, delicious and capable of transforming your homemade Bloody Mary into a cocktail that any bartender would be proud to serve. Not only will they inject some flavor and bite into your Bloody Marys, but they will also help you to learn just how versatile this classic cocktail can be. 1. Van GoghFirst, on our list, we have a vodka that is simply perfect for the beginner cocktail mixer. If you are just getting accustomed to the punch that hard spirits can deliver, then you probably want a Bloody Mary that delivers plenty of flavor but without the fiery vodka bite â and thereâs no better vodka for the job than Van Gogh. As a company, Van Gogh is primarily known for its range of flavored vodkas. However, this doesnât mean that the company lacks its own original vodka recipe. Because of its crisp and cool flavor, this particular vodka is acceptable to be drunk neat. And when added to a traditional Bloody Mary recipe â this vodka delivers a cocktail that is both savory and rich but without the strong liquor flavor. 2. ReykaOriginating in Iceland, Reyka is produced using a combination of wheat and barley which is then run through copper stills heated by geothermal power. Before the final product is bottled, it is filtered through lava rock and pure glacial water to create a vodka that is clean and fresh and biting. Distinctive in its pungent vanilla crispness, this particular spirit is capable of packing your Bloody Mary with a whole range of new flavors â giving it both earthy and spicy notes. The vodka also features a more distinctive syrupy quality, which can work particularly well when paired with the thick soupiness of tomato juice. Not only is Reyka considered one of the cleanest vodkas in the world, but it is also famed for being eco-friendly and kind to the environment. 3. Absolut PepparAbsolut is considered to be one of the most successful vodka producers in the world, with its products often being seen in media across the globe. Originally established in the snowy lands of Sweden â Absolut has recently garnered attention for their variety of flavored vodkas. But what makes Absolut Peppar so different from the others? Well, for one thing, itâs a vodka that has been infused with a mixture of different spices, including black pepper, white pepper and chilli flakes. And if youâve ever had a truly amazing Bloody Mary, youâll know that the best ones often pack a spicy kick. So why not cut out the middleman and use a vodka that already holds all the spices you need to give your Bloody Mary a little warmth? 4. ChopinChopin is arguably the best vodka to use when it comes to mixing up a Bloody Mary from the comfort of your home. This Polish spirit can trace its roots back to the 18th century, where it was first distilled in the small Eastern village of Krzesk. Made from the freshest seasonal potatoes, this vodka is produced using only locally sourced and natural ingredients. This elegant vodka is noticeable for its rich and creamy consistency, which is then topped with a hint of sweetness. Although delicious on its own with ice, the vodka is also favored for its mixability, and it can be enjoyed in a variety of vodka-based cocktails. The fresh and light taste makes this vodka the perfect complement to the bombastic Bloody Mary ingredients, giving you a cocktail that is distinct and delicious. The vodka may be known for its silky quality, but this doesnât mean that the drink is completely void of roughness. If you are looking for a vodka that truly captures the essence of the Eastern European tradition â then Chopin is a vodka you will want again and again. 5. Aylesbury DuckIn short, this is the best vodka if you love alcohol and love drinking alcohol. Created by the 86 Company, this vodka is ideal for making quick and strong cocktails that can be enjoyed by you and your friends. Unlike other vodka recipes, Aylesbury Duck was invented for the sole purpose of being mixed into other drinks and cocktails. We really donât suggest trying to drink the vodka straight â because itâs a strong one! As a vodka, Aylesbury Duck is to-the-point and almost unapologetic in its flavor. When you add this vodka to a cocktail, we promise youâll be able to taste it. Although strong and cruel, this vodka does come with its own little perks. Between the strong alcoholic taste, you will begin to notice hints of fruit and pepper. Although this particular vodka is a far cry from the subtlety of Van Gogh, it can help to elevate the herby and darker tones of your Bloody Mary 6. AnestasiaAs a vodka, Anestasia may be known more for its turbulent history than the actual vodka itself. Distilled in the United States, this vodka was universally despised upon its 2013 release, with critics panning the spirit for its âpatented technologyâ. A process that gave the drink the ability to make your throat and tongue tingle upon contact. Since these tragic beginnings, Anestasia has reinvented itself as a neutral vodka, complete with a new recipe and even swankier bottle. Now the brand is considered a pinnacle of the corn vodka industry and is known for being one of the more credible American-produced vodkas. Because of its sweet corn base, this vodka comes with a rich and sugary note that makes it an excellent vodka when combined with the brash flavors of tomato and spice. The balanced quality of the spirit also gives it a mineral quality that could give your Bloody Mary a freshness that you have never experienced before. 7. BelvedereBelvedere is a Polish vodka that you may just recognize from your local cocktail bar. Not only is this the vodka that is treasured by bartenders around the world, but itâs also one of the most stylish vodkas being made today. Distilled from naturally grown Polish rye, this vodka bears a lot of similarities to Aylesbury duck in its unflinching approach to the traditional vodka harshness. However, where Aylesbury is void of any flavor, this spirit packs in all the notes you will ever expect from a cool and clean vodka. Rich in tones of vanilla and butterscotch, this vodka is capable of elevating any Bloody Mary to a professional level, giving it a decadent and almost gourmet flare. If you want to mix up your own Bloody Mary from home, but donât know what vodka to use, then you can never go wrong with Belvedere. 8. Snow LeopardSnow Leopard is a company that not only creates vodka but also works to save snow leopards from the brink of extinction. With 15% of the companyâs profits going towards the conservation of these beautiful animals, this might just be the most kind-hearted vodka to feature on our list. So the next time youâre in the mood to mix up a Bloody Mary, maybe you should reach for the vodka that is actually working to make a difference in our world. Distilled from high-quality spelt grain, this vodka is known for its distinctive lemon flavor. When added to a traditional Bloody Mary, this vodka can help to pack the classic cocktail with a burst of cool citrus, giving it a crisp and more vibrant feel. So why not save some snow leopards and use this delicious vodka in your Bloody Mary today! 9. Ketel One BotanicalIf you are the kind of person who loves drinking a fruity cocktail in the backyard on a hot summerâs day â then Ketel One Botanical is the vodka you need. This crisp and fruity vodka originally comes from the tulip fields of Holland, where it is distilled using a heady combination of naturally grown ingredients. Heightened with touches of cool cucumber and zesty mint, this vodka can bring freshness to any cocktail you make. Produced as a floral alternative to traditional vodka recipes, Ketel One Botanical is capable of making your next Bloody Mary into a sweet and delicious cocktail that is brimming with the flavors of summer. Smooth and friendly, this vodka promises to deliver a garden-rich experience, unlike any other vodka you have ever tasted. 10. BakonYes, you read that name right! This potato-based vodka comes to us all the way from the state of Oregon, where it is cleverly infused with the rich and smoky flavor of breakfast-ready bacon. First released to the public in 2009, this spirit was the first bacon-flavored vodka to ever grace our beautiful green planet. Packed full of bacony flavor, this crisp and delicious vodka is perfect for the alcohol lover who wants to add some uniqueness to their homemade cocktail recipes. Not only will this vodka give your Bloody Mary a deep and dark flavor, but it will also add a touch of sweetness to the traditionally hearty drink. 11. Russian StandardIf you love making cocktails at home, but find yourself working with a budget â then thereâs no better vodka than Russian Standard. Easy to find and ridiculously affordable, this boozy vodka is the perfect spirit to help top up your Bloody Mary recipe. A popular vodka in Russia, this spirit is the real deal and can pack one hell of a punch when drunk straight or from a shot. In terms of flavor, Russian Standard is often recognized for its notes of spice and grit, giving it an oily and almost aromatic essence. So if you have a hangover and fancy curing it with a good old budget Bloody Mary, then Russian Standard should be the vodka in your cupboard. However, we canât guarantee your hangover will get any better! The Top Seafood Chain Restaurants in America
Sometimes the freshest catches of the day come from chain restaurants. So if youâre looking for an incredible meal that wonât cost you a fortune, these are the best seafood chains thatâll fit the bill nicely. Although some of them are coastal, others are located all across the country, and you can enjoy fantastic fish entrees and sides in convenience and style. After a lot of research and taste testing, hereâs my list of the best seafood chains across the US. Long John SilverâsLong John Silverâs is a staple of casual seafood fare. Itâs been around for an exceptionally long time, and itâs easy to understand why; the food is cost-effective but delectable. Long John Silverâs is a chain of restaurants that offers a consistent food quality with rapid service. In fact, there are 850 different locations of this seafood chain. Although some people think that the offerings are a little bit on the greasy side, the fact of the matter is that Long John Silverâs offers a variety of fried food options that are absolutely addicting. If you want consistent quality that hits the spot with many options for the kids and an experience that offers immediate gratification, Long John Silverâs is most likely your best bet. Also, you can find them anywhere across the country. Bonefish GrillBonefish Grill is a higher-end option that delivers big time when it comes to value and flavor. They source their seafood from places worldwide, and a lot of their offerings are grilled, so you donât have to worry about overly-fried or greasy food. Itâs a refreshing change and one that allows you to keep your diet intact while sampling some delicious seafood. Bonefish Grill was founded in 2000, and for 21 years, they have been hitting the mark between a sophisticated restaurant and a family-friendly place perfectly. Theyâre just as good for date night as they are for your next family outing. Whatâs more, there are plenty of different dishes that suit picky palettes, as well as simpler tastes, at Bonefish Grill. With inventive vegetable medleys and sides, Bonefish Grill is the complete package. Joeâs Crab ShackWhen you think of laid-back, tropical weather and great seafood, thereâs a good chance that Joeâs Crab Shack crosses your mind. This iconic restaurant has a variety of different seafood and, of course, fantastic crab legs. If you go to Joeâs Crab Shack, make sure that youâre hungry, as they are famous for serving mega portions of your favorite fare. In fact, on some days, Joeâs Crab Shack offers all-you-can-eat shrimp and hushpuppies for only 20 dollars. Since this special varies depending on where you are in the country, itâs good to check with your local place. The best dishes at Joeâs Crab Shack are usually the simplest. Itâs not such a fantastic idea to try to get too fancy with the menu here. Instead, go for the all-you-can-eat shrimp or crab and enjoy all of the hushpuppies that you want. Joeâs Crab Shack is a great place to bring your family or friends for a celebration, and youâll love the family-style eating. Kingâs Fish HouseKingâs Fish House is a West Coast staple thatâs beloved all over California and Washington. When it comes to Kingâs Fish House, the word of the day is âfresh.â Kingâs Fish House is nothing if not a fresh fish warehouse, serving delicacies from all over the world at peak deliciousness. They have a ton of different seafood on order, and all of it is perfectly prepared. Whatever youâre craving, you will most likely find it at Kingâs Fish House. You can sample fresh Pacific tuna, catfish, trout, tilapia, or more. You can also snack on fresh oysters and even sushi. Kingâs Fish House is a great place to take the seafood connoisseurs in your life, as it is more affordable than many other options and still offers impressive fare. Itâs also an excellent place to go if you want to try out a few different seafood options that youâre unsure if you will like without breaking the bank. Arthur TreacherâsArthur Treacherâs is well-known for its delectable fish and chips, and this legacy brand must be doing something right because they have been around since the mid-1860s! Unfortunately, Arthur Treacherâs is slightly less popular than it used to be, dwindling down substantially from its previous 800 locations, but the fare is still good, and you can get an authentic fish and chips for a fraction of what you might pay at other restaurants. Arthur Treacherâs specializes in breaded cod entrees, combined with a healthy serving of their traditional chips or french fries. Although some people think that itâs not as great as it used to be, others still contest that Arthur Treacherâs is the closest thing that you will get to authentic fish and chips on this side of the pond. Red LobsterThere are few things that are more American than Red Lobster. This legendary seafood chain restaurant has a cult following, and many people have lots of fond childhood memories revolving around this seafood restaurant. Specifically, people love the cheddar bay biscuits and the cheap lobster. Although the lobster and crab legs are comparably less expensive, the quality is still there, making Red Lobster both a family-friendly restaurant and one that you can take a date to. Red Lobster has also appeared several times in pop culture and was famously referenced by Beyonce in Formation. Itâs also referenced and showcased in many popular films and movies. However, one of the critical things that make Red Lobster so unique is the fact that they offer consistent quality. When you order the cheddar bay biscuits, you know exactly what you are getting. This is one of the key things that keeps Red Lobster so popular and people coming back year after year. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is a reference to the fictitious shrimping company in Forest Gump, and the star power associated with the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. has undoubtedly helped propel it to popularity. The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. came into existence about two years after the original movie aired, and it unapologetically riffs on the classic film. If you are a Tom Hanks or Forest Gump fan, youâll certainly enjoy the decor. With 30 locations, you can find them all over the country. As the name suggests, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. serves up shrimp in many different ways, including peel and eat shrimp, shrimp creole, and other options. Although some people think that this seafood restaurant is overpriced, others enjoy the atmosphere and consistent food quality. Realistically, itâs a fun place to take the family, and youâll get a nice meal every time. Eddie Vâs Prime SeafoodEddie Vâs Prime Seafood is a southern Texas treasure that originated in Austin, Texas. They offer fresh, quality seafood with a southern spin. Eddie Vâs Prime Seafood offers inspired dishes like lobster tacos, featuring homemade tortillas and char-grilled corn. They also offer fresh seafood, like jumbo Gulf shrimp and local fishes. Although you can find steak, chicken, and other menu items at Eddie Vâs Prime Seafood, itâs best to stick with the fruits of the sea. The reasoning is simple; Eddie Vâs Prime Seafood specializes in seafood and does a moderately good job with their steak and chicken. There are plenty of other places where you can get a fantastic steak, but at Eddie Vâs Prime Seafood, you should try one of their local fishy favorites. Pappadeaux Seafood KitchenPappadeaux Seafood Kitchen features fresh cajun food thatâs sure to delight everyone in your party. Although cajun cooking tends to be on the spicier side, you can certainly customize your order at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, making it a good option for kids and adults alike. In addition, their waitstaff is famous for being hospitable and accommodating, so any special requests are likely to be attended to properly. The Pappadeaux Platter is one of the most popular entrees, and it really gives you a good overview of what you can expect from the restaurant. The Pappadeaux platter features crab, oyster, crawfish, catfish, and shrimp. Itâs great for sharing as well. If you choose just one item from Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, make it the crawfish. This is the shining star of their menu and should not be missed. Legal Sea FoodsLegal Sea Foods doesnât rely on gimmicks or overly fussy dishes because they have something better than all of that; the freshest seafood imaginable. In fact, they are one of the best seafood chain restaurants, if not the best, because of their attention to local ingredients. You can tell that the people behind Legal Sea Foods have a deep respect for the fish they serve and a desire to offer the finest ingredients possible. Try their creamy clam chowder or delectable sea scallops. You will not be disappointed. These best seafood chain restaurants deliver on flavor and are cost-effective. Many of them are also family-friendly and accessible. The 8 Best Whiskeys For Making a Whiskey Sour Cocktail
Whiskey sour is an elegant and sweet-tasting cocktail classic. Although they can vary, most whiskey sours contain a frothy egg white to give the drink a creamier texture, freshly squeezed citrus juice, and a little dash of syrup. Whiskey sours and classical beverages like it can be tailored to suit any taste. There are quite a few ways to make a whiskey sour and finding out which method suits you best can be quite the experience. Maybe you want egg white or maybe you don’t. Maybe you want it on the rocks with a cherry or with no cherry up against the rocks. Of course, most importantly is the type of whiskey you use. The whiskey you choose can significantly change the flavor profile of this classic cocktail. Selecting the right whiskey with the correct balance can transform your cocktail from something vapid into something extraordinary. To help you tailor your whiskey sour according to your taste, we have rounded up the best whiskeys for whiskey sours in 2021. With advice from expert bartenders, you will be able to find a whiskey that can change your cocktail game for good. The best whiskeys for your whiskey sourWoodford Reserve BourbonSporting a medium body with a naturally sweet taste, bourbon whiskey is often considered to be the go-to choice for the sour treatment. Woodford Reserve Bourbon is smooth and rich. But it does not pack too much of a punch to overwhelm the flavor profile. This is one of the key aspects you should look out for when making a whiskey sour. Many people prefer whiskeys that tend to have a milder taste. Something that compliments all the other flavors of the cocktail. Whiskey that has a very strong essence may not blend in so well and can be a little too strong for whiskey sours. Elijah Craig Small BatchOriginating in Kentucky, Elijah Craig Small Batch whiskey is spicy and rich. With a hint of grounding smoke, this bourbon is a popular choice with many whiskey sour drinkers. Its distinctive taste is the perfect choice when standing up against the sweet and simple flavor of the syrup as well as the tangy lemon in a whiskey sour. The spice left on your palate leaves no doubt what your whiskey sour base spirit is. Eryn Reece, head bartender at Banzarbar in New York states how the Elijah Craig bottle enhances the “rustic, traditional version” of a whiskey sour. We believe Elijah Craig should be added to a whiskey sour casually. Use a tumbler on top of around 4 pieces of ice. You can also strain it into the cocktail glass if you prefer. With a reasonable price, Elijah Craig can transform your whiskey sour into something delectable, unique, and comforting. Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Bourbon WhiskeyAs we mentioned, Bourbon whiskey is a preferred choice for most whiskey sours. One example is Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Bourbon Whiskey. This has all of the characteristics that bourbon should carry and is ideal for adding to cocktails. As whiskey sours tend to have sugar and lemon battling out to impress your taste buds. Russell’s Reserve Bourbon Whiskey compliments these tastes wonderfully but not in an overbearing sense. Some bourbons in a whiskey sour can be too “high-proof” or “hot.” Others can be too mellow. It’s about finding a middle ground so the whiskey isn’t too overpowering or so weak that it gets lost in the depths of the cocktail. If you like your whiskey sour with fresh lemon, some simple syrup, an egg white, and a few drops of Angostura bitters on the egg white, then Russell’s Reserve 10 Years Bourbon Whiskey may be the perfect combination. Nikka Days WhiskeyNikka Days Whiskey is a bright and flavorful Japanese whiskey. Many whiskey lovers are all too aware of the quality whiskeys Nikka continuously produces and this is no exception. Although a perfect choice for adding to a whiskey sour, it is just as exceptional when sipping alone. Nikka Days Whiskey was crafted for casual drinking. It is meant to be served on the rocks or in a cocktail. This blended spirit has a supreme balance of floral flavors with bright fruit and a substantial smoke. While it has some weight, Nikka Days Whiskey does not overpower any of the other flavors in a whiskey sour. Complex and layered, Nikka Days Whiskey is the right choice if you like your Scotch sours. Finish off your whiskey sour with Nikka Days Whiskey by adding a quality cherry and use the best ice you can. Talk about a taste sensation. Treaty Oak Ghost Hill BourbonTreaty Oak Ghost Hill Bourbon is mostly made from Texan corn with a great deal of Texan wheat. This helps create a distinct and unique whiskey that is truly delicious. The term “bourbon” refers to any American whiskey that is made from at least 51% corn. And no, whiskey doesn’t have to hail from Kentucky to be considered bourbon as many people believe. Due to its unique blend of flavors, Treaty Oak Ghost Hill Bourbon is a favorite among casual whiskey drinkers as well as the more experienced such as Randy Hayden, the beverage director of The Roof at Ponce City Market in Atlanta. He recommends adding “2 dashes of Angostura Bitters” to your Ghost Hill Sour for the best possible result. Old Elk Blended Straight BourbonHere, we have another good old American bourbon. Made in Colorado, Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon is one of many high-quality bourbons hailing from the state. This spirit sports a smooth yet rich flavor that goes pretty heavy on the malt. With an ABV of 44%, this bourbon is certainly not timid when it comes to proof. That being said, Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon is not as hot in a whiskey sour as you may think. The added alcohol level amplifies the delicious sweet and zesty flavors of the bourbon instead. As Mel Maddox, the Old Elk distillery’s bartender states, “its proof allows for the flavors of the grain to really shine.” Don’t just stop with Old Elk Straight Bourbon, however. We suggest adding an egg white for the creamiest, frothiest cocktail you may ever have. You may think you have a dessert in front of you rather than a top-quality whiskey sour. Eagle Rare BourbonKentucky, the epicenter of top-quality bourbon production. Another example is Eagle Rare Bourbon. Rare by name but not in nature, you can usually find this in stores such as Pappy Van Winkle and Blantons. Its ease of purchase is mainly down to its popularity. With an incredibly smooth flavor, Eagle Rare Bourbon is skillfully crafted. It contains hints of leather, coffee, and oak that combine for a supremely balanced spirit for a whiskey sour. We believe Eagle Rare Bourbon is simply perfect for whiskey sours. It provides enough bite to cut through the lemon and sugar of the cocktail but not so much that it overpowers the drink. RittenhouseRittenhouse is one of the top rye whiskeys out there. Its signature spice and smooth heat work wonders in a whiskey sour. Many people love this drink for its slightly higher proof. Because it has an ABV of 50%, Rittenhouse can stand up to mixing better than most. Even when cut with water, sugar, and citrus, its orange zest and spicy flavors shine through but not too much. The added boost of alcohol results in you being able to taste Rittenhouse’s spicy rye flavor even when the drink is completely mixed. While it is drier than the bourbons on our list, Rittenhouse could become your whiskey of choice if you like to avoid too much sweetness in your whiskey sours. Wild Turkey 101 RyeAs soon as you try Wild Turkey 101 Rye, you will be met by a pepper bite. This distinct flavor results in a sweeter and smoother personality than that of bourbon. Sean Geason from True Story Brands in Atlanta explains why Wild Turkey 101 Rye is so ideal for whiskey sours. He says that this rye whiskey is “a robust and round whiskey with great spice notes that does a great job standing up to the citrus and sugar in a sour.” Whiskey should never overpower your sour drink and this is what makes Wild Turkey 101 Rye a great option. Smooth but with a bite, your whiskey sour will only be improved by this spirit. Jack Daniel’s Gentleman’s JackIf you’re a little unsure of what kind of whiskey sour you want, then Jack Daniel’s Gentleman’s Jack is a great place to start. This whiskey has relaxed flavors that will not overpower any whiskey sour. While you can still taste the lemon and sugar from the sour, Gentleman’s Jack will add a little hint of vanilla to spruce up the drink. This whiskey is soft. It is velvety. It is delectable. Its soft and velvety flavor is due to charcoal filtering that helps create a very easy-to-drink cocktail. With lemon and crystalline sugar flavors, Jack Daniel’s Gentleman’s Jack plays wonderfully with the lemon and sugar of your whiskey sour cocktail. With a hint of smoke underneath, this is the kind of whiskey sour you will often get at your local bar. Dependable, tasty, and easy to drink. Lot 40 Rye WhiskeyWhile many typically opt for an American bourbon for whiskey sours, there are other choices out there. Why not try a homegrown Canadian spirit? Hailing from Canada, Lot 40 is a classic rye whiskey. This whiskey is pot-stilled (distills flavored liquors) and has a wide range of notes in its flavor from baking spices to stone fruits. Lot 40 Rye Whiskey boasts daring levels of spice that may put off potential drinkers at first. However, this simply brightens the cocktail’s citrusy flavors further. Add some dashes of bitter when making the egg white and add into the drink. The structure of the cocktail will change dramatically. If you’re looking for a more interesting whiskey sour, then this is the way to go. Old Forester RyeClassic sours tend to just use citrus juice as their number one element but you can be more creative than this. Some mixologists like to incorporate other fruit flavors into their cocktails. If you’re looking for a fruitier-favored whiskey sour, Old Forester Rye is the answer. Its toasty notes combined with apricot make for a heavenly lemon-apricot sour. It’s 100 proof hold up in a whiskey sour when you add more fruit such as raspberries and blueberries. So, be creative. Experiment with raspberry and blueberry sours and you may find the drink you have been searching for. In SummaryIt is worth remembering that whiskey sours should be on the sour side. It’s called a whiskey sweet for a reason so there is no need to add too much simple syrup. The wonderful thing about whiskey sours is that you can be creative with them. But some whiskeys will suit your tastes more than others. Just because a cherry or egg whites may not work for you with one whiskey doesn’t mean they won’t with another. Try any of the whiskeys on our list and we are sure you will find something that you will stick with for a long time.
