Where to Curl Up with a Bowl of Ramen in Philly Right Now
As summer comes to a close and the weather (finally) begins to cool down, ramen season is upon us. Although I could eat soup year-round, thereâs something comforting about holding a piping hot bowl of ramen in your hands during one of Philadelphiaâs frigid cold winters. Itâs actually a sign of respect to loudly slurp your noodles, so donât listen to your friends if they tell you youâre being obnoxious. While weâre far from Tokyo (in distance, but not in quality), these Philadelphia ramen restaurants will transport you to Japan, sans the 16-hour flight. Best Ramen in Philadelphia
Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House1022 Race St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 As you can probably tell from the name, Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House is so popular because they make their own Nan Zhou pulled noodles. Although their signature dish is not the traditional Japanese-style ramen, their Chinese noodle soups are just as satisfying. Select thin or thick (hand-drawn or shaved) noodles after opting for one of their 22 flavors of soups. Like most of the top-notch restaurants in Chinatown, this hole-in-the-wall serves some unusual delicacies, such as sliced intestine, oxtail, and beef tripe. Too hot for noodle soup? Go for the stir-fried noodles with pork soy sauce and assorted dumplings. Sang Kee Noodle House3549 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19104 All hail the house of noodles! Did you know that ramen was most likely introduced to Japan by Chinese immigrants? Regardless of where it came from, we can all agree that noodle soup is great, especially Sang Kee Noodle Houseâ âbig bowl broth noodle soup.â First, choose your soup from options like braised beef, lemongrass chicken, or lamb with cumin. Then, choose your noodle: thin egg, thin rice, udon, rice thread, or ramen. Lastly, savor that soup loud enough for everyone in the room to hear, especially the chef! Terakawa Ramen204 N 9th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 Terakawaâs broth, which is simmered for 2 days, is the kind of broth you want to drink straight from the bowl (no spoon and no broth left behind). This Kyushu style ramen is the most prestigious variation of Tonkotsu ramen, so itâs a no-brainer that it would make this list. According to their website, itâs the chefâs intention for you to experience the passion they put into every bowl of ramen, which you can do by following 4 simple steps: taste the broth, taste the egg noodles, experience the flavors and texture of the ramen, and flavor the broth and noodles using the spices on your table. If you do this, the dish will evolve throughout your meal. Take a seat at the counter and enjoy a big bowl of their signature Terakawa ramen or an even bigger bowl of their Kyushu Danji (Whopper style) ramen! Nom Nom Ramen20 S 18th St, Philadelphia, PA 19103 Nom Nom Ramen holds a special place in my heart because itâs where I went on my first date with my boyfriend of 3 yearsâ¦at the time, I was trying to be vegetarian and ordered the tofu ramen, but I instantly regretted that decision once I tried his classic pork ramen. While the vegetarian ramen is a good substitute for those who donât eat meat, youâre really missing out if you donât get the aka nom nom ramen with tonkatsu broth and pork belly chashu. The âaka bombâ is an explosion of flavor that will have you ânommingâ this bowl in seconds. Seriously, whatâs more romantic than ramen? Yamitsuki1028 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 The owners of Yamitsuki believe that ramen is good for all seasons and moods, and I couldnât agree more! Feeling down? A bowl of their Yamitsuki ramen or shrimp tempura udon is sure to pick you up, as well as their extensive sake and sushi menu. Now that indoor dining is back, you can experience their modern, anime-themed bar for after-work cocktails (they have a stellar happy hour) or late night bites (theyâre open till midnight on weekends). Youâll be slurping these noodles almost as fast as Naruto! Poke Burri255 S 10th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 You may be wondering why a poke spot is on this list, but within Poke Burri is Lifting Noodles, Philadelphiaâs newest ramen joint. With several other award-winning locations across the United States, however, theyâre not new to the ramen game. Perhaps one of the few vegan-friendly ramen restaurants in the city, Lifting Noodles has oodles of green kale noodles in a vegetarian broth. Who wouldâve known that eating your veggies could be so easy? In addition to ramen, Poke Burri has the most unique sushi concoctions on their secret menu, like sushi donuts, pizza, burgers, and corndogs. What else is on the secret menu, you might ask? Fried ramen carbonara and â Iâve already said too much⦠Cheu Fishtown1414-1416 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125 Weâll never forget Cheu Noodle Bar, one of Phillyâs favorite ramen bars in Center City. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to close their doors permanently. Luckily for us, Cheu Fishtown is still open for business. Located inside a restored stable, this Japanese-inspired, neon-lit restaurant has great vibes inside and out. During the colder months, their alley oasis has hanging string lights and heat lamps. But if you can, definitely sit at the bar for the true Cheu experience. One positive thing to come from COVID is that you can now order from both Cheu and Nunu next door. Try a bowl of Cheuâs coconut curry or matzah and brisket ramen, along with Nunuâs sushi hoagie. Neighborhood Ramen617 S 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19147 Best of Philly 2019 winner Neighborhood Ramen is a BYOB counter service ramen shop in Old City. Their menu is small and shifts with the seasons (they are currently brothless until September). But ramen is ramen, am I right? And where else in Philly are you going to find ramen that pays homage to the City of Brotherly Love, like pizza maz and cheesesteak maz? Find them at their brick and mortar location or popping up around the city and beyond (they were just in Iceland)! Check out their Instagram for menu changes and specials (Update: the pizza maz just sold out, but theyâll be replacing it with something else this week. Stay tuned). Hiro Ramen1102 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 For nearly 10 years, this cash-only ramen house has been serving authentic ramen in Center City. In fact, they practically invented the ramen scene in Philly. Like Neighborhood Ramen, their menu is small, but that makes the already near-impossible decision of what to order a little easier. Do you go for the âHiroâs Inch of Heavenâ (pork tonkotsu broth, blended soy sauce, pork belly chashu, bamboo, egg, and nori) or the âGates of Hellâ (same thing but with chili oil)? What about the âBlack Pigâ or the âPig and Misoâ? Each one is only $10, so you might as well get all of them! Tomo Sushi and Ramen228 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 Fun fact: Tomo comes from the word âTomodachiâ or âfriendsâ in Japanese. So, bring your friends to this BYOB sushi and ramen restaurant in Old City! This menu has something for everyone, from mayu tonkotsu ramen, to vegetarian shoyu ramen, to vegan yasai ramen (with seitan teriyaki mmm), as well as a whole menu of vegan rolls and vegan inari sushi, like the âguacarollieâ and âstraw-veggie.â While Tomo is a little more on the upscale end in comparison to some of the other spots on this list, considering that they donât have a single rating below 4-stars, it should be your next go-to for a date night or special occasion. Aki Nom Nom Sushi1210 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107 Not to be confused with Nom Nom Ramen, Aki Nom Nom also features the chefâs aki bomb in their aki nom nom ramen, but Iâm not sure if aki is different from aka or if one of them is a typo. Aki Nom Nom has a wide selection of ramen in regular or large portions, including four variations of each of the following broths: pork belly tonkotsu (cooked for 36 hours), kyoto chicken chintan, and vegetarian. For an extra kick of umami, I suggest adding the aki bomb to any ramen (except the vegetarian one). If the weather is cooperating or you just prefer to sit outside, dine outdoors in their makeshift streetery. And donât skip the $30 all you can eat sushi or you might be kicked to the curb. Hajimaru Ramen200 E Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125 Hajimaru Ramen in Fishtown and Bryn Mawr is dine-in only, but letâs be honest; ramen shouldnât be delivered. Thereâs just something special about guzzling fresh noodles out of a big bowl that is incomparable with pouring lukewarm broth into a plastic container at home. That feeling was something I sorely missed in the midst of the pandemic, and this is why I didnât eat ramen for more than a year. But Hajimaru is the perfect place to go for your first meal out among the rest of society. The signature ramen with spicy tonkotsu broth, extra chashu, a whole marinated egg, sweet corn, baby bok choy, menma bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, kikurage mushrooms, fishcake, and scallions has everything other ramen restaurants are lacking. Ramen Bar3400 Lancaster Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104 If you go to Drexel or Penn, youâve probably been to Ramen Bar, a West Philly sushi and ramen restaurant walking distance from campus. Do you like to customize your dish? Well, Ramen Bar lets you choose your toppings (while giving suggestions that I would also advise you to follow), noodles (straight or wavy), broth (vegan or pork), and spice level (on a scale from 1-5). On top of the classic shoyu, miso, et cetera, this menu has green curry and tom yum ramen, tsukemen or âdipping noodlesâ served separately with a spicy minced pork shoyu dipping soup, and mazesoba ramen, brothless noodles served with an egg yolk meant to be mixed together. Morimoto723 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 Steven Starr has managed to master every genre of cuisine, including Japanese. Morimoto, a contemporary and ultra chic Asian fusion restaurant, is a fine dining experience. Do they have the best ramen on this list? Definitely not. However, the Morimoto ramen is described as the âiron chefâs chicken noodle soup,â so saying itâs good would be a gross understatement. The Morimoto Omakase, a multi-course tasting menu, is also well worth the expensive price tag next time you have something worth celebrating. Final ThoughtsRamen isnât just a cheap dinner for college students (even though I do love Maruchan when Iâm on a budget). Still, thereâs no wrong way to eat ramen, unless youâre using a fork. Speaking of noodles, check out my list of the Best Italian Restaurants in Philly to find out where to eat the finest macaroni and gravy, besides the Italian Market. Top 10 Fast Food Chicken Restaurants8/9/2021
Top 10 Fast Food Chicken Restaurants
One of the few foods that are always delicious is chicken. Add it to sandwiches, soups, salads, or even rice; you just canât go wrong with it. One other form of chicken that is a millennialâs (and everybody elseâs) favorite is crispy, fried chicken. Not everyone makes it the same, and thatâs the beauty of it. Whether you go for fried, grilled, smoked, or even baked, chicken is the holy grail of all good food. Weâve compiled a list of the best fried chicken restaurant chains for all chicken lovers. If youâve never been to any of these restaurants or want a break from your regular favorite, we recommend you check out these places for a scrumptious bite. Here are our picks for the best chicken restaurant chains. Best Fast Food Fried Chicken
PopeyesFor millennials, the name Popeyes brings back memories of the classic cartoon with Popeye the sailor, but the restaurant is altogether a different story. The chain has 2,347 units in the US, and the number seems to increase. Popeyes has regularly seen an increase in sales over the years and is giving Chick-A-Fil tough competition. For spicy chicken lovers, nobody does fried chicken better than Popeyes. Their chicken is equally crunchy throughout from the outside and so juicy inside. With so many locations, itâs a real challenge to maintain excellent quality in every unit, but theyâve done it. Before 2019, Popeyes was famous for their bone-fried chicken, but then came the now supremely popular Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, which turned the chicken world on its head. The sandwich turned out to be a viral sensation and ran out just as fast. The concept was nothing extraordinary. A fried chicken breast topped with pickle and sandwiched in a brioche bun, with either mayo (mild) and cajun sauce (spicy version), yet it turned out to be one of the best chicken sandwiches ever created. After the initial mind-boggling response, the sandwich didnât return until two months. But when it did, people lined up and waited for hours to grab their favorite chicken sandwich. If youâve never been to Popeyes, after reading our review, youâd surely want to try it out. Chick-A-FilThe fact that Chick-A-Fil tops the American Consumer Service Index year after year is enough proof of why it is rated as the Best Fast Food Restaurant in the US. Their customers are fans of everything on their menu. Although their fried chicken sandwich consists of a buttery bun, a fried chicken breast, and pickles, nobody knows how they make it so good despite the very simple concept. Another menu item worthy of praise is the chicken nuggets with the sweet Polynesian sauce. Chick-A-Fil not only tops as the chicken expert but other offerings by the chain are equally delicious such as waffle fries and milkshakes. Churchâs ChickenChurchâs Chicken has been in business for 67 years, and with 1045 locations in the US alone, it has become a go-to place for many fried chicken fans. Nobody does hand-battered chicken better than Churchâs Chicken. The chicken is well-seasoned and crisp; itâs all about quality. The runner-up item is their honey-butter glazed biscuits that are buttery and crumbly. If youâve never tried these, youâre missing out on the amazing flavor. Other try-worthy items on the menu are the Southern-style sides, which include fried okra, and jalapeños, as cheese bombers or pickled. BojanglesBojangles is primarily a chain located in the Southeastern parts of the United States with hundreds of locations throughout. Although on my recent trip to Roatan Honduras, the locals we quite proud of their recent addition of Bojangles stores to the island community. Specializing in cajun-seasoned fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits, you canât go wrong with ordering one of their chicken biscuit sandwiches or traditional bone-in chicken meals. The have classic sides like fries, mashed potatoes and green beans as well as southern inspired items like grits, and their twist on tots called bo-tato rounds. Raising CaneâsFounded in 1996, Raising Caneâs has become one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in the US, with 400 operating outlets as of yet. The chain got its name from a yellow Labrador which belonged to one of the owners. In 2018, the chain saw a record 22.8% growth in systemwide sales. Raising Caneâs specializes in boneless, battered, and deep-fried chicken fingers that come with their signature sauce. Add in crinkle-cut fries and coleslaw for extra crunch. The only downside about the restaurant is that they only offer chicken fingers and no other fried chicken option. This makes it a good spot for occasional eaters. WingstopThe fact that Wingstop has around 1,150 outlets within the US and scored a 15.3% increase in sales in 2018 proves peopleâs love for tender, juicy chicken wings. Whether you prefer boned on boneless wings, like it mild or hot, Wingstop has enough variety for everyone. If you like your wings spicy, indulge in the Atomic wings but remember to order a big glass of iced water to go with it. The best part is, the spiciness doesnât overwhelm the rest of the meal. Another delicious but spicy choice you could have is Mango Habanero. However, if spicy flavor is not your thing, opt-in for the mild flavor of the original hot or try the buttery garlic wings with parmesan or the tangy and sweet Hawaiian. ZaxbyâsUnlike other restaurant chains that specialize in either chicken wings or fingers, Zaxbyâs offers both in a variety of flavors in its menu. The fast-food chain has over 900 units in the US and is still going strong. You can fill up on a chicken fingers sandwich or Kickinâ Chicken on Texas Toast, which comes with a ranch dressing and the flavorful Tongue Torch sauce. Another item worthy of mention is the bone-in-wings with a sauce of your choice. You can either go for the chainâs original buffalo sauce or the wimpy sauce (if you prefer mild flavor). But if you really wish to heat things up, go for the hottest sauces known as Nuclear and Insane. Besides fried chicken, Zaxbyâs also offers other items on its menu, such as salads, appetizers, and sides. JollibeeOriginally from the Philippines, Jollibee made its way to the United States in 1998 and now has over 1300 outlets worldwide. But the chain doesnât operate on a very large scale in the US as it has only 37 units in the US. Its wide variety of menu and distinguished flavors make it stand out from the crowd. Their Jolly Spaghetti contains a sweet sauce made from banana ketchup (yes, you read that right), and they have a Halo Halo dessert, which is actually delicious although it is made from beans. The Jollibee chicken isnât sweet but packed with flavor. No matter what you try from the menu, be it the breakfast chicken sandwich, the bone-in Chikcenjoy, or the boneless chicken dippers, nothing seems to disappoint. The inside is tender and juicy, while the outside is crunchy, exactly how fried chicken should be. Shake ShackShake Shack is famous for its burgers, but their fried chicken is just as tempting. The chainâs signature fried chicken sandwich, the Chicken Shack, is a flavorsome combination of fried chicken, lettuce, pickles, and buttermilk mayo. The toasted potato bun adds to the mouthwatering taste. The size of the sandwich is enormous, and you canât get enough of the peppery bread crumbs wrapped around a giant, juicy, crunchy chicken breast. Shake Shack turns the concept of a simple fried chicken sandwich into an experience. KFCIt wonât be wrong to call KFC the granddaddy of all fried chicken chains in the US. The first KFC restaurant launched 89 years ago when Harland Sanders opened his first restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. Although KFC may have 4,100 outlets in the US alone, they saw a 0.4% sales decline in the year 2017. There was a time when KFC was the go-to fried chicken joint for everyone, but their inconsistent quality has cost them many customers who turned towards alternate chains. If youâre lucky, youâll get a tender, juicy, and crisp fried chicken, but if not, youâll be in for a disappointing experience. Thatâs why it gets the bottom spot on our list. Although the chicken is a hit-or-miss case, KFC still does a decent job with the mashed potatoes, gravy, and the buttery, flaky biscuits. The chain also tried capturing the vegan market by introducing a plant-based chicken sandwich, but many people are still skeptical about the idea as rumors are afloat that the plant-based chicken is fried in the same fryer as the real chicken. Final ThoughtsChicken is one of the easiest foods to prepare, but it takes skills to master the art of fried chicken. All the chains above have earned themselves a reputation for their distinct choice of flavors and service quality. Of Course, some are doing better than others, but weâre fortunate to have an endless variety to try out. Youâll see countless videos tutoring how to prepare restaurant-style fried chicken at home, but somehow the taste doesnât turn out 100% similar. Itâs better to leave the fried chicken to the experts. Mocktails: What Are They?8/8/2021
Mocktails: What Are They?
Whether youāve decided to undergo a health kick and are looking for some enjoyable alternatives to alcohol, or you or a loved one is expecting a baby and you want to learn all about the infamous āMommy Mocktailā ā you might currently be wondering what a mocktail actually is. If that sounds a little like you, then youāre in the right place! Stick around, because, in this guide, weāre not only going to be talking you through what a mocktail is, but weāll even be providing you with a recipe or two that you can try out today! So, wherever youāre ready, read on. What are mocktails? In a nutshell, a mocktail is a type of non-alcoholic beverage that is specifically designed to replicate that of a regular cocktail. From their appearance to their ingredients (minus the alcohol, of course) mocktails look pretty much exactly the same as the cocktail it has been based off, which means that from first impressions, a mocktail could quite easily pass as a cocktail. This makes them perfect for nights when you donāt feel like drinking, or for pacing yourself during happy hour. Whatās more, most cocktail bars will serve mocktails on their regular drinks menu, which means that they undergo the exact same mixology preparation as normal cocktails do. With all that being said, the final drink that you will end up with will be the exact same as a regular cocktail, the only difference will be that there isnāt any alcohol in it. For this reason, mocktails are extremely popular with momās to be, people who do not wish to drink alcohol, as well as those who are simply looking for a delicious drink to savor and enjoy. How are mocktails prepared and presented? As we were saying above, cocktails arenāt anything new! Besides being around for a very long time (just think of the Shirley Temple ā grenadine, ginger ale and no alcohol) mocktails are treated in the exact same way standard cocktails are, which therefore means that they are prepared and presented in the exact same way. Regardless of whether youāre thinking of hosting a drinks party and want to be the perfect host, or youāre simply wanting to try out your first mocktail for the very first time and want to know what to expect ā keep in mind that a good cocktail should look exactly the same as itās alcoholic counterpart. To help you along your way as you learn everything there is to know about mocktails, letās take a look at the following: The āPerfectā Mocktail Checklist:No matter whether youāre heading out to happy hour at the finest cocktail bar in town or youāre simply planning on entertaining a few friends and family at home, a good mocktail should always consist of the following characteristics:
Now, for the fun part! Now that you know everything there is to know about making mocktails, weāre now going to be talking you through a super popular mocktail recipe that you can try out today! From zesty lemon to moreish pineapple, youāll find a mocktail here to suit everyone. Mocktail Recipe To Try: Lemongrass-Basil MocktailBelow, weāre going to be talking you through our reimagining of the standard old mocktail, with a yummy and zesty lemon twist. However, before we go any further and jump into the recipe, itās very important to remember that while youāre preparing the lemongrass that will be going into this cocktail, that youāre making sure that you are peeling through all of the tough exterior layers of the lemongrass, so that only the soft, tender layers are left to use. In addition to this, you should also note that in order to make enough for a glassful of this particular mocktail, youāre going to need to have around 6 lemongrass stalks ā so make sure that you have enough prior to trying out this recipe. As a side note, even though the grocery stores near you will most likely stock lemongrass, in the event that you are unable to locate any of it, you could alternatively head down to your local Asian supermarket. Once there, you will no doubt be able to find some lemongrass there which you will be able to use in your recipe. Alternatively, if you canāt get your hands on any lemongrass at all, then you can switch out lemongrass for lemon zest instead, which will taste relatively similar to that of lemongrass. Escargot: What Is It & Where Does It Come From
When it comes to the world of adventurous eating, there are certain dishes that often rank higher in notoriety than others. From dishes such as birdās nest soup to deep-fried chicken hearts and frogs legs, there are many cultural cuisines from around the world that often use strange and seemingly unconventional ingredients to create delicious and savory results. Escargot is one of the top items on that list. Although your immediate reaction may be to run away from a dish that challenges your perception of flavor, we say you should always try whatever food you are given. Otherwise, how will you ever know if you truly love or hate it? Even the most disgusting of ingredients can be used to make something that is brimming with character and taste. So you should never turn down food because of fear or concern. One dish that is often spoken about in hushed tones and fearful whispers is escargot, a European recipe that has gained quite a reputation due to the main ingredient that makes up the focus of the dish. But what exactly is escargot and is it really as bad as so many people make it out to be? Well, we are here to answer those questions! My first time eating escargot, I was 12 year old and visiting the French restaurant in Epcot Center. My Mom thought me and my siblings would hate it, but after we had a taste, we loved it more than our Croissant sandwiches. Down below we have compiled some fascinating facts concerning escargot and its storied history. We have also outlined how the dish is prepared, as well as provided a detailed description of the dishās unique and distinctive flavor. So if you have ever wanted to know more about this staple meal, then now is the time. So What Is Escargot? The name escargot is derived from the French word for snail, which is exactly what the dish is made from. Yes, you read that right, escargot is famous around the world because it is a dish made up almost entirely of snails. Considered a popular staple in French cuisine, escargot is also considered a delicacy in Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Portugal. However, the dish has also left its mark on various other countries around the world, with it often featuring on menus in French restaurants. Now we understand that the notion of eating snails may seem a little strange, and even a tiny bit gross, but did you know that snails are actually considered a fairly nutritional foodstuff? This is because snails, like most bugs and insects, are very high in protein but are also known to contain a very low amount of fat. However, although escargot may be made from snails, this does not mean that all species of snail are edible, as only a small selection can be used to make the dish. The most common species of snail used to make escargot is the helix snail, which is a variety of land snail that is known to be particularly flavorful when cooked. When it comes to preparing the dish, the snails will traditionally be cooked inside their shells, before being served on a plate with heapings of garlic butter and parsley. Although the idea of eating snails may still seem a little bizarre, you have to understand that they are just another animal that humans are known to consume. In fact, there is even historical evidence that suggests that humans were eating snails as far back as 30,000 years ago ā so itās not even a new thing! How Is Escargot Served? As we have previously mentioned, escargot is considered to be a staple of French cuisine and will often be served as an appetizer or entree. The traditional French recipe sees the snails cooked in garlic and parsley butter, although there are other variations that prepare the snails in a wine or brandy sauce. In terms of the cooking process, escargot is usually prepared in a special cast-iron pan, which ensures that the snails are cooked properly before they are served. However, some chefs have also been known to cook the snails in a traditional saute pan with herbs and butter. When the dish is prepared and finally served at the dinner table, the snails will usually still be in their shells, which means you have to remove them using a special utensil called a snail fork. This is essentially a two-pronged fork that is capable of entering the shell and removing the snail without causing any damage or mess. Some restaurants also choose to serve the dish alongside a slice of crispy bread, which you can then use to mop up any garlic butter you may have left behind. In some cases, the snails may even be removed from their shells and served on top of the bread, along with cheese and herbs for extra garnishing. If you are now interested in trying escargot but live in the United State, then your only chance of encountering the dish may be by visiting a high-end French restaurant. Not only do many French restaurants prepare and serve the dish, but they also consider it a particular delicacy, which means that it may be sold for a very high price. So please keep this in mind before you attempt finding the dish, as you may not be willing to pay the same price for snails as other dedicated foodies. What Does Escargot Taste Like?So if you are now interested in trying escargot, you are probably wondering what the dish even tastes like. Although many passing samplers will tell you that the dish tastes very similar to chicken, hardcore escargot enthusiasts will probably disagree. To say that the dish has a unique taste is something of an understatement, as a single bite will often contain a variety of unique flavors. Of course, one of the main things you will probably taste first is the sauce, which is usually so packed with garlic and herbs that it often overpowers the actual taste of the snail. But that isnāt always a bad thing! We all know that garlic and butter is a heavenly pairing, but when combined with the earthy flavor of the snail, that pairing becomes almost divine. Brimming with a rich and buttery flavor, we promise that escargot will always satisfy even the most critical of garlic lovers. In terms of texture, escargot has often been compared to foods such as oysters, clams and mushrooms. This is because, no matter how well you cook a snail, they are always going to have a dense and rubber-like consistency. However, this does not damper the tasting experience, as snails are also known to be smooth on the tongue and slightly gooey when eaten. If we had to compare the texture to something, then we would have to argue that the mushroom comparison is a pretty accurate one. Collingswood Restaurants Serving Up Amazing Food
I lived in Collingswood for about four years, and even though Iâm no longer a resident, I havenât gone very far. I still hop on the Patco from Philadelphia and head over to this amazing town for dinner. Within walking distance of the Patco station, all along Haddon Ave, youâll find top-notch restaurants, shops, and boutiques. Collingswood has that small-town feel, with big-city flavor. If you havenât checked out the restaurant scene here, youâre missing out. This town has it all, middle eastern cuisine, brunch restaurants, hibachi, Thai food, and an overwhelming amount of Italian restaurants (a common joke among people familiar with the area). Not to mention â most of these restaurants are BYOB, a huge plus in my opinion. While living in the area I was able to try almost all of the restaurants along Haddon Ave and in the surrounding area. I probably head back once a month to shop (usually dropping way too much money at BeSpoke â a plant shop you should definitely drop by) and grab dinner. Check out my list below for the best restaurants in Collingswood. Best Restaurants in Collingswood
Hearthside801 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Hearthside opened up in 2017 by owners Dominic Piperno and wife Lindsay. This corner restaurant is one of my favorites in Collingswood. Itâs definitely a more upscale experience, great for a date night or for a special event. You can even reserve the chefâs table which can accommodate a larger party. With an open kitchen, youâll get to experience how the food is prepped. Everything is cooked in the hearth in the restaurant (hence the name). Seats are limited, but you can reserve a spot right at the hearth for a unique experience. Now for the food â I canât say I have a favorite, itâs all just so good. For small plates, I would recommend the Gulf Prawns, Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, or Grilled Romaine Salad. If youâre getting some medium dishes, try out the Orecchiette; fennel sausage, broccoli rabe, and roasted long hots. The large plates, you canât go wrong with either of them, really depends on your mood. However, if youâre in the mood to splurge I would suggest going for the 40 oz. Prime Dry-Aged Porterhouse or Whole Roasted Bronzino. Bistro Di Marino492 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Bistro Di Marino is one of my top Italian restaurants in Collingswood. They have a few locations around South Jersey, so even if youâre not near Collingswood, youâll be able to enjoy their amazing food. Located right on Haddon Ave, itâs a convenient walk from anywhere in Collingswood. If itâs nice out I would suggest getting a seat on their outdoor patio! They have a large menu, so this spot is generally good if youâre with a large group. Sagami Japanese Restaurant37 Crescent Blvd, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Next up, Sagami Japanese Restaurant has to be my number-one destination for sushi as well as traditional Japanese cuisine whenever Iâm in town. The wood interior and warm atmosphere of Sagami makes the entire place feel as though it was plucked from the streets of Tokyo and gently placed here in Collingswood. I like to head here for dinner, mostly, but they serve a fantastic lunch menu that I love to try when Iâve got some time in the middle of the day. Indiya608 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Check out this next place, Indiya, off of Haddon Avenue the next time you need a little bit of delicious Indian food in Collingswood. Their menu here at Indiya is filled with traditional delicacies that make it one of my favorite places to go for dinner in Collingswood. I always go right for an order of their delicious vegetable samosas to start, and then I order tandoori chicken for an entree which I highly recommend to anyone going here to eat. Another thing we love about Indiya is their dessert menu, so be sure to save room for tasty treats like mango and coconut sorbet or their gulab jamun. Sabrinaâs Cafe â Collingswood714 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 One of my favorite things to do is to go out to eat for breakfast or, even better, brunch, and there are so many great restaurants in Collingswood NJ to choose from, but no one does brunch better than Sabrinaâs Cafe. This laid-back American restaurant serves up some of my favorite breakfast classics like French toast, shrimp and grits, as well as fried chicken and waffles, each with their own unique twist. If you like French toast, then this is the place for you because they use thick, buttery challah bread for all of their French toast, even going so far as to stuff it with decadent cream cheese. Li Beirut619 W Collings Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08107 Depending on where you live, it can be rare to find a great Lebanese restaurant, so whenever Iâm in the mood for some incredible shawarma, I always make the trip over to Li Beirut in Collingswood. Li Beirut is one of my absolute favorite Collingswood restaurants to go to when I want to immerse myself in a foreign culture. Their âTaste of Lebanonâ menu option is the one to pick if you want to take a culinary tour of Lebanon right here in New Jersey. With the âTaste of Lebanonâ option, it serves either 2 or 4 patrons, and you are given the choice of a salad, specialty entree, and a dessert for a great deal! The Pop Shop Collingswood729 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 The Pop Shop is such a great place to eat in Collingswood, in my opinion, because there are not many other restaurants like it that Iâve had the pleasure of coming across in my travels. This place is great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner alike inside a retro, 50s-themed diner full of Americana culture and delicious food. Sandwiches are the specialty here at The Pop Shop and no matter which one you pick, Iâm confident youâll enjoy it. If youâre having trouble making up your mind, then we recommend trying one of their turkey b.l.t. club sandwiches or a buffalo fried chicken sandwich. The Kitchen Consigliere700 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 The Kitchen Consigliere is another one of my favorite Haddon Avenue restaurants in Collingswood because of its refined Italian ristorante ambiance and delectable cuisine that reminds me of my Italian grandmotherâs cooking. Youâll find all the classic Italian cuisine you could ever want here at The Kitchen Consigliere and it all tastes homemade. I absolutely love their veal Milanese and their eggplant parmesan, but I rarely ever eat there without having some of their delicious pasta to start with. Circles Thai8 Powell Ln, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Up next is Circles Thai, a wonderful Thai restaurant serving authentic cuisine that you can find off of Powell Lane, right across the street from the Devilâs Creek Brewery, and I would say that they are easily one of the most delightful restaurants in Collingswood, New Jersey. I am a massive fan of Thai curry, so whenever I am in the mood for it (which is quite often), then I will gladly hop in the car and cruise on over to Circles Thai because they have 7 different flavors of curry to choose from that are all so good itâs hard to choose a favorite. Il Fiore693-695 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Il Fiore is such a nice place to eat dinner in Collingswood, especially if you have a nice bottle of wine that youâve been saving for a delicious meal and you want to bring it with you to the restaurant since there is a BYOB option here. I wholeheartedly recommend ordering an appetizer of calamari here at Il Fiore, and then I would move into their chicken marsala, but the fish of the day has never disappointed me, either. Probably the best thing about Il Fiore, I think, is their massive selection of pasta. You can get gnocchi, fettuccine, penne, linguine, and so many more, making this place a pasta-loverâs dream. The Tortilla Press693-695 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Up next, we have our first Mexican restaurant on the list called The Tortilla Press, easily one of my top dining destinations in Collingswood for unique burritos and amazing Tex-Mex food. The thing I love the most about The Tortilla Press is that one of the burritos you can order weighs in at a whopping 5 pounds, so you better make sure you come in on an empty stomach if you plan to take on that monster. They have plenty of normal-sized burritos here too, however, as well as tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, and many more Mexican classics. Woksabi659 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 If you are looking for a nice Asian bistro to grab some sushi in Collingswood, then Woksabi is the place for you. Not only do they have a massive array of fresh sushi to choose from on their menu, but they also offer other traditional Japanese cuisine like ramen noodles, tempura, edamame, and much more! One thing I recommend is a bowl of their delectable tonkotsu ramen along with a volcano roll to give you the complete Japanese dining experience. Healthy Garden Cafe at Collingswood747 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Are you feeling health-conscious, looking for an all-natural restaurant in Collingswood where you can eat guilt-free? If thatâs the case, then Healthy Garden Cafe is exactly what you need. I love Healthy Garden Cafe because all of their food is made with organic, all-natural ingredients and they include plenty of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options on their extensive menu. One thing that I always go to Healthy Garden Cafe for is their gourmet pizza and their unbelievably delicious breakfast menu that you can order off of until 5:00PM. Villa Barone753 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 The penultimate place on my list of restaurant recommendations for Collingswood, NJ, is called Villa Barone, another wonderful Italian restaurant that serves fine cuisine at a fair price for both lunch and dinner. The parmigiana here, both chicken and veal, is absolutely to-die-for, but they also have tons of gourmet brick-oven pizza options, as well as enough homemade pasta entrees to feed all of Italy! Osaka720 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Lastly, we come to Osaka, upscale Japanese sushi and hibachi place that I consider to be another great restaurant in Collingswood, by far. Not only can you get some of the freshest sushi and most delicious hibachi cuisine in town here at Osaka, but you can also bring your own bottle to enjoy and save a little money since this is one of the few restaurants around here that has a BYOB policy. My go-to order here at Osaka is almost always going to be a bento box. Usually, I will order the beef teriyaki or the chicken katsu box, but I strongly recommend them all because each one is so tasty. Final ThoughtsCollingswood may be a small town, but it is packed to the brim with flavor thanks to all of these amazing restaurants that line Haddon Avenue, so the next time you find yourself in this charming place, be sure to check off all of the spots on our list to experience the best places to eat in Collingswood. Mission BBQMission BBQ might be the most patriotic chain on our list. Mission was founded with the American people in mind, especially those who serve the country. The company donates and fundraises tens of thousands of dollars for veterans and first responders each year and continues to give back to the community. Of course, Mission BBQ has more than a great mission â they also have a great barbecue! From their chopped brisket to the pulled pork, their seasonings and rubs are delicious. Mission brings classic American flavors to the people in sixteen different states (and growing). 8. Dinosaur Bar-B-QueOne of the hidden gems of the barbecue world is the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que chain. This small but mighty chain is located in New York and New Jersey and boasts some of the best barbecue in the Northeast. On their menu are customizable chicken, brisket, pork, and catfish plates with several different options for rubs, sauces, and more (if you want to try a side, you have to try the deviled eggs). You can also get combo plates, sandwiches, and barbecue burgers. The dine-in restaurants offer several craft beers as well! 9. Famous Daveâs BBQIt might surprise you to find out how many restaurants on this list werenât founded in the South! Famous Daveâs BBQ, another one of the countryâs largest barbecue chains, was founded in Minnesota and now has almost two hundred restaurants around the country (and three outside of America). This barbecue chainâs menu includes options for single meal plates, combos, and their signature Feasts: three different servings of meat and up to six sides. Pro tip: they have one of the best fast food apps for gifts and discounts â download it before you order and start racking up points! 10. Full Moon Bar-B-QueNamed âthe Best Little Pork Houseâ in Alabama, Full Moon Bar-B-Que has locations all over the state. Itâs a smaller chain, but not to be trifled with when it comes to making quality and delicious smoked meats. Full Moon is a state favorite both in the Birmingham area and further out. Theyâve been in business for 35 years and are proud of their handmade, freshly smoked menu of meats. However, the dish that Full Moon is most famous for might be their vinaigrette slaw â get a side with your ribs and see if you donât fall for it! 11. Jim N Nickâs BBQJim N Nickâs BBQ brings the feel of a local, family-run business to the availability of a chain spreading over seven states. They make everything from scratch daily, smoke it on site, and donate leftovers to the community at the end of the day. Their menu is relatively pared down, but the food is delicious. In addition to the classic barbecue staples, Jim N Nickâs offers more American classics like loaded baked potatoes, hearty brisket chili, and brisket chili cheese fries. Of course, you canât leave without trying the banana pudding! 12. L&L Hawaiian BarbecueIf you want something a little different than traditional barbecue, try a meal of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue! Initially based in Hawaii, the restaurant has spread throughout the Southwest and beyond with its signature Hawaiian flavors and an array of classic barbecue options. L&L is one of the largest barbecue chains for a good reason. L&L offers barbecue chicken, ribs, and pulled pork, but with an island twist. There are also multiple shrimp and seafood options, Chicken Katsu, and SPAM Musubi (a Hawaii classic). For a new barbecue experience, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is the perfect night out. 13. Smokey BonesSmokey Bones is another Southeastern barbecue joint. They have over sixty locations spreading up through the East Coast and Midwest and are continuing to grow. A slightly more upscale barbecue option, Smokey Bones offers more than just brisket and ribs. Smokey Bones has an extensive menu featuring regular barbecue offerings, salads, sides, soups, and more. 12 Best Sake to Try
Sake, also known as Japanese rice wine, is perhaps a curious drink to most people on the western side of the globe. Many have heard of it but donât know too much about it. Sake is the national beverage of Japan, which is where it gets its name from. Given its popularity over there, it has made its way to the U.S. and is rapidly gaining in popularity. So, what is this mysterious drink exactly? Sake is actually quite similar to beer in its brewing process in that it involves converting starch into sugars that ferment into alcohol. It is specifically made from fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the unwanted bran. The rice used varies between sake rice such as Yamada Nishiki and ordinary table rice. Sake rice is used to make premium sake, while table rice is used to make non-premium sake. There are many different kinds of sake, each with a distinct brewing process and unique flavor profile. Letâs take a look at some of the best sake that are available in the market. The Best Sake
